For adult weight-management treatment with Wegovy, usual eligibility is BMI at least 30, or BMI at least 27 with one or more weight-related conditions. Examples include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea. Eligibility still requires an individualized safety assessment.
| Adult BMI | Typical weight-management consideration |
|---|---|
| Below 27 | Generally does not meet usual weight-management criteria; other product-specific indications may differ |
| 27 to below 30 | At least one weight-related condition is usually required |
| 30 or higher | Obesity criterion is generally met; clinician safety assessment is still required |
BMI is a screening tool, not a full measure of health, body composition or treatment need. The clinician also reviews your health history, previous treatment, medicines, goals and the ability to maintain adequate nutrition. Insurance authorization has separate requirements.
Wegovy is contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2 or prior serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide. Weight-management treatment is not appropriate during pregnancy; discuss stopping at least 2 months before planned pregnancy.
A history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, diabetic retinopathy, severe gastroparesis, dehydration or medicines that cause hypoglycemia requires specific review. These are not all identical to absolute contraindications.
Ozempic is intended for adults with type 2 diabetes and has additional diabetes-related cardiovascular and kidney indications. It is not approved for chronic weight management. Wegovy injection also has adolescent and additional adult indications; this page's BMI summary concerns adult weight-management use.
Provide height, weight, medication list, allergies, weight-related diagnoses and pregnancy plans. Your clinician may request glucose or A1c results, kidney function or other tests based on your history. Online assessment may need an in-person examination. A BMI result alone cannot establish approval.
Patients usually get more value from medical review, fit assessment, and follow-up planning than from choosing a medication based only on headlines or social posts.
