Both carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodents; the human relevance is unknown. They are contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2 or a serious allergy to the respective medicine. Severe gastroparesis, pregnancy plans, pancreatitis and gallbladder history require discussion.
Both can cause dehydration-related kidney injury and low blood sugar when used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Tell your anesthesia team before procedures because delayed stomach emptying may increase aspiration risk.
Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, or very little urine. Trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat is an emergency. Severe bloating with vomiting or inability to pass stool or gas also needs urgent assessment.
A clinician weighs your treatment goal, diabetes status, cardiovascular history, sleep apnea, kidney health, gastrointestinal tolerance, other medicines, pregnancy plans and access. A trial average cannot predict your individual response. Do not combine these medicines or switch doses yourself.
Ask your insurer about the exact brand and indication: formulary status, prior authorization, documented BMI and conditions, step therapy and renewal requirements can differ. Compare the total ongoing cost, including visits, labs, pharmacy charges and supplies; introductory prices and savings offers may change.
Patients usually get more value from medical review, fit assessment, and follow-up planning than from choosing a medication based only on headlines or social posts.
